The mammal was found with the cable tied tightly around its upper torso.

He was taken to RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre and only weighed around 250g.

Shaun the hedgehog found himself with sores under his armpits as a result of the zip tie, which he was eventually freed from.

A spokesman for the wildlife centre confirmed that Shaun also needed surgery, saying: “He was initially examined, released from the zip tie and put on pain relief medication.

“We had noticed he was lame and he also had spines which were growing in the wrong direction due to where the zip tie was.

“Once he was stronger, he underwent a general anaesthetic and we had to surgically extract 13 trapped spines.

“He is doing well and has progressed to the next stage of rehab.”
