A man who was found dead in a field in Kilmacolm has been named as cops launched a murder probe.

Robert Best was discovered after police were called to a report of a body being discovered in a field near High Mathernock Farm in the Inverclyde town at around 9.20am on Tuesday, November 11.

The man has been formally identified as the 50-year-old, who was reported missing from Greenock on the same day. His family has been made aware.

Two men, aged 44 and 51, have been arrested and charged in connection with the death.

Both were due to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

A 45-year-old man was arrested in connection with assault and released pending further enquiries.

Officers investigating Robert’s death are continuing to carry out enquiries into a report of a disturbance in Lansbury Street, Greenock, which took place between 11pm on Monday and 3am on Tuesday.

Robert’s friends and family have been left devastated following the news and tributes have poured in on social media.

His heartbroken daughter Tia Darroch wrote: “Rest in peace Dad”, while his son Robert Darroch added: “RIP Dad.”

Robert Joyce said: “Rest in peace Dad. No one deserves that.”

Danielle Frizzell added: “I’m so sorry. My heart goes out to you. Rest in peace uncle Robert.”

Kirsty Best said: “RIP cuz you didn’t deserve this. You will be missed surely.”

Stacey Maria Mains wrote: “RIP Robert. Thinking off all the family totally heartbroken for you. Love you all.”

Karen Johnston wrote: “My heart and thoughts go out to family and friends. I’m so sorry for your loss.”

Police were continuing to search the field in Kilmacolm on Wednesday following the discovery of the body.

Pictures show a large area of the field cordoned off with multiple officers in uniform present. Cops could be seen taking forensic tarpaulin from a van to erect at the scene.

On Tuesday, forensic officers were spotted in the garden of the home on Lansbury Street. A forensic tent was erected at the site as multiple officers stood guard.

The road was locked off between Poplar Street and Smillie Street as the investigation commenced.

Detective Chief Inspector Graham McCreadie said: “Our thoughts are with Robert’s family and friends at this time. We are providing them with support as our investigation continues.

“An extensive investigation is being carried out and I am asking anyone who was in the Lansbury Street area or near High Mathernock Farm at those times to get in touch.

“If you have CCTV, private footage or dash-cam footage of that may have captured something, please contact us. Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be vital.”

An online portal has been set up to encourage members of the public to submit information directly to officers.
