Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic has been rewarded for a terrific start to the new season at the MKM Stadium by being nominated for October’s Manager of the Month.

Jakirovic oversaw his City side claim 10 points from a possible 12 in the month, becoming the first Tigers boss since Liam Rosenior in February 2024 to be up for the award.

During an impressive October, City beat Sheffield United at home before going to Birmingham City after the international break and ending the Blues’ 29-game unbeaten home record in the league with a 3-2 win.

The Tigers then backed up that win in the West Midlands with a pulsating, but deserved 2-1 win over Leicester City, which will live long in the memory for Liam Millar’s stunning early goal on his first start in almost 12 months.

City were on course to notch up four wins from four when Joe Gelhardt fired them in front against play-off rivals Charlton Athletic, only to concede in the 91st minute, but that result left the Tigers outside the top six on goal difference.

Jakirovic faces stern competition for the crown, which will be announced on Friday morning, with Coventry City chief Frank Lampard likely to take it after picking up 15 points from a possible 18.

Here’s the contenders…

Sergej Jakirovic (Hull City)

Able to get the most out of the different characters in his squad, Jakirovic has moulded individuality to a team ethic, leading Hull into the play-off race with 10 points from four difficult games, including wins over Sheffield United and Leicester.

Frank Lampard (Coventry City)

Coventry didn’t just take over as Championship leaders in October, they did so in swaggering style, scoring 18 goals as they picked up 15 points from a possible 18. The trust and belief Lampard shows in his players is paying rich dividends.

Alex Neil (Millwall)

If it might have been expected that Neil would take a while to integrate summer acquisitions into the pacy, pressing and fast-passing style he favours, he is ahead of schedule, guiding Millwall up to third with 12 points from five games.

Gerhard Struber (Bristol City)

Struber has energised City players and fans alike with his passion and positivity since taking over in the summer. The exciting football he preaches is mixed with tactical flexibility and earned his side nine points from four October games.
