It’s crucial to provide hedgehogs with food and water during the winter months as they wake up to forage. Supplementing their diet helps them build and maintain the fat reserves they need to survive until spring.

Even while hibernating, hedgehogs burn energy and need to eat to stay alive. Foraging is vital for replenishing energy and relieving themselves and, if temperatures drop too low, they can freeze.

Interestingly, hedgehogs enjoy cat food. It can be a beneficial addition to their diet, particularly if it’s high-quality, meat-based and grain-free.

If you decide to leave some out for them, you can offer either wet or dry food. The important thing is to serve it with fresh water and avoid foods like milk, bread and mealworms, which are harmful to them.

Guidance was also provided on what to do if you’re ever concerned about a hedgehog. If you see one during the day that appears weak, lethargic or infested with fleas, immediate action is required.

If they seem particularly small during the winter months, they also need your assistance. If they weigh less than 450g, this could be a cause for concern.

All you need to do if you’re worried is place them in a box with a wrapped hot water bottle. Then get in touch with your nearest wildlife rescue centre for advice on what to do next.

Always seek professional help from an animal expert, but keep the hedgehog comfortable in the box until it can be seen by a professional. This is a simple rule that should always be followed.
