Celebrating a timeless emblem of Britain’s historic and contemporary identity, the British Lion is featured on a bullion coin range representing one of the nation’s most enduring symbols. Drawing inspiration from centuries of heraldic tradition, its striking design depicts a lion in a bold stance, reaffirming its status as an emblem of British heritage and strength representing the nation’s perceived qualities. A national symbol of Great Britain – specifically England dating back to the 12th century, the emblem arrived with Norman kings who displayed lion motifs on their banners and heraldry. It was King Richard I (reigned 1189 – 1199), known as Richard the Lionheart, who played a significant role in solidifying the lion as a royal and state symbol displaying three golden lions on a red background on his royal seal. The lion continues to be used as a symbol of England today, appearing on the Royal Arms, in sports team emblems, and in other contexts.
Designed by David Lawrence, the reverse side features a motif showcasing Britain’s heraldic lion is shown seated alongside a shield, in reference to strength, defence and protection. Adding to the coin’s overall security and integrity, surface animation which depicts the familiar Union Jack flag of Great Britain can be seen in the background which appears to move when the coin is tilted under a source of light. Above the primary design near the upper rim is the text LEO BRITANNICVS with the coins’ specifications of weight and fineness along with metal separated by the year 2025 placed near the lower rim. The complete design is surrounded by a border of dots. The obverse of each coin option features the definitive effigy of HM King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. The denomination from 2 POUNDS to 100 POUNDS and year of issue 2025 also appears on the obverse as part of the legend surrounding the King’s likeness.
