Hull City will look to try and improve their squad in January, depending on the room for manoeuvre within the transfer restrictions they’re working under, according to boss Sergej Jakirovic, who wants to improve his squad.

Owing to their squad numbers, the Tigers were working on a one-in and one-out policy in the final days of the summer window, and it’s likely to be the case again when the winter window opens on New Year’s Day.

City remain unable to pay loan or transfer fees for players under the terms of the punishment handed down to them by the EFL back in the summer, and it’s hoped those restrictions will be eased in time for next season, assuming they don’t notch up seven days of late payments before the beginning of July.

For now, the Tigers must work within strict restrictions, and that will impact what they can do in January, though Hull Live understands the club do have options at their disposal to supplement what, at this stage, looks like a push for promotion to the Premier League.

During the summer, though, owner Acun Ilicali, sporting director Jared Dublin, Jakirovic and the rest of the club’s recruitment staff did a sterling job to bring in players like Oli McBurnie, John Lundstram, Joe Gelhardt, Semi Ajayi and Darko Gyabi, and fans will hope they can conjure up more magic.

“I don’t know what we can do in January,” Jakirovic said. “Because we have an embargo, it’s a question for Jared (Dublin), the sporting director. We will see if we can change something so that we can try to improve our group. We will do that for sure, and we will see what happens.”
