There’s a huge impediment to a happy-ever-after for Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) and Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) in Emmerdale – and his name is Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill).

And the thing with Kev is, as well as being Robert’s actual husband, he’s also practically the human definition of the term ‘loose cannon.’

A special flashback episode showed how Kev and Robert got together while they were cell mates in prison.

Robert was the target of some brutal treatment from the other prisoners and Kev stepped in to sort the situation out and ensure he was safe. Despite Kev protesting that he wasn’t gay, eventually their friendship turned into something more and they got married.

When Robert left the prison he thought that would be the last he’d see of lifer Kev, but Kev recently turned up in the village. He told Robert he was allowed an early release because he was terminally ill.

Viewers have known for a while that isn’t true, but the only person in the village who knows it isn’t true is GP Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) – and Kev has made it very clear that Liam would be wise not to say anything, especially to Robert. Kev can be a very scary man, so Liam has so far kept quiet.

Meanwhile, Robert and Aaron are desperate to be together, but can’t risk Kev finding out. Robert has told Kev that he no longer wants to be with him as a couple, although he has promised to be by his side when he dies – something that Robert thinks will happen fairly soon, but Kev knows will probably be decades away.

The best case scenario for Aaron and Robert would be if Kev either decided to leave the village, or was persuaded to leave. And in upcoming episodes they come up with a plan.

Kev has been back to his old profession of robbery and is stashing the proceeds somewhere. Robert tries to find out where.

He and Aaron tell Chas (Lucy Pargeter) they have a plan to get Kev out of their lives and Chas agrees she’ll help them.

Their plotting is interrupted by Liam, and as he listens to the plan it’s clear to the others that he’s hiding something. Eventually he caves in and tells them that Kev is not terminally ill.

Obviously this comes as a shock but it reinforces Robert and Aaron’s idea that they need to get Kev out of their lives and their plan is the best way.

Later the same day, Kev is in the church checking on the loot from the robbery which is stashed there. Aaron is secretly watching him, and he makes a call to Robert.

And soon the police arrive – and Kev is arrested for armed robbery and is bundled into a police car and taken to the station.

Is that the last we’ll see of Kev in the village?
