Spencer Matthews has admitted he feared losing his I’m A Celebrity wife Vogue Williams – and explained why they rarely kiss and cuddle in public.

In a wide-ranging interview, TV star and athlete Spencer, 37, spoke about his battle with alcohol with Fearne Cotton this week and his changing life.

And talk also turned to his wife Vogue several times, who is entering the jungle as a late entry for camp.

Looking back to a time when Spencer was struggling he said at his worse he continued to drink even though he feared it could jeopardise their relationship.

Recalling one incident he said: “I love life as an experience. And I think it’s interesting to hit those moments where you feel like a loser and you feel *** about your behaviour. And, you know, I remember this one night, I drank a bottle of whiskey and, you know, I was calling friends to see if they wanted to come over.

“I was on my own, Vogue was away, filming something, working, doing really well, you know, being this person that everyone adores and everyone loves. And I just felt like a ****ing loser. Like I felt like a ****ing loser.

“Like, and I knew that I would lose her as well. If I lose her, lose her, if I carried on. But I kind of carried on.”

Thankfully a kind friend came over and put Spencer to bed before he drank anymore, and these days he has his drinking under control. He trains hard to run marathons and raises money for charity running and competing around the world.

On the Happy Place podcast, he said: “I have a different relationship with it now. And actually coming back to your question about shame, which was really interesting, I know that tonight I’ll probably have two or three margaritas, and then I’ll pump the brakes and I’ll stop, because I know what happens if I don’t.

“I have kids to look after. I have businesses to run. A hangover with kids is no joke.

But I am able to do that, which is great, because there was a point in my life where I really felt like I might not be able to do that, and that total abstinence might be the only route for me.”

Spencer said now he has alcohol under control and will still occasionally drink but in moderation.

He also turned to explain how in some ways he and Vogue were opposites with his wife. If she has a day off she will reorganise the children’s clothes, and would never sit down and have her own time to read a book. He then turned to speak about affection.

He said: “The boys are less affectionate, which is fine. They’re a bit more like Vogue. Vogue isn’t one for like, you know, handholdy, kissing, cuddling.

“We are affectionate, but like, she’s like, I could hold her for a good few minutes in the morning, whereas like, you know, 20 seconds is probably okay for her like in the morning. Especially if we haven’t brushed our teeth.

“I love all of my children equally, but there is a…I have this bond with my daughter. I think it’s fairly normal as well.”

The relationship has come under scrutiny in recent months especially when the pair stopped making a podcast together and Spencer changed agents. But on her way into camp Vogue insisted she would really miss her husband and their kids.

The couple share son Theodore, six, daughter Gigi, four, and youngest son Otto, three, and it is leaving them that is preying on her mind more than any Bushtucker Trial.

“My only real worry is missing the kids and missing Spencer and missing my family,” she said.

“I have done all my Christmas shopping. I have done our food shops for the next four weeks. I have organised everything down to a tee because I kind of do all that stuff at home, so I have got everything organised so I do not have to worry when I get back.”
