As 2025 is drawing to a close, it’s safe to say we’ve been treated to many great tense films this year, with one of the most compelling now available to stream on a new platform in the UK.

Starring The White Lotus’ Meghann Fahy and 1923’s Brandon Sklenar, Christopher Landon’s thriller Drop has just landed on Sky Cinema and NOW for those with a Cinema subscription.

The claustrophobic film is written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach and sees Fahy’s character Violet Gates, a therapist and widowed mother of one, going on her first date in years only to find herself in a hostage situation.

As far as bad first dates go, we wouldn’t blame Violet for being forever traumatised over this one.

As she’s waiting for her date, photographer Henry Campbell, Violet starts receiving “Digi-Drops” from an anonymous sender nearby.

The increasingly threatening texts continue as the pair enjoy a fancy dinner at a high-end Chicago restaurant.

Soon, Violet realises the sender is watching her every move and any attempt to alert the staff or escape would be pointless as she’s tasked with murdering one of the diners.

We won’t spoil the surprise twist — better go in knowing as little as possible and revel in Fahy’s dramatic performance as Violet is trying to make sense of her nightmare.

When it hit cinemas back in April, Digital Spy predicted the movie would be a sleeper box-office hit and praised the “hookable” and “irresistible” concept.

Don’t just take our word for it as Drop is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 83% out of 235 reviews.

Other critics delighted in the deranged tone of the film, as The Sunday Independent (Ireland) reviewed Drop as a “demented tech thriller” that “will keep you guessing” and The New York Times called it “pleasantly silly”.

As the temperatures out there are, well, dropping (bad pun intended), Drop is an excellent choice for a cosy movie night in. If you do watch it with a date though, better put your phone away.

Drop is streaming on Sky Cinema and NOW.
