With only one full-length studio album to date, published over a decade ago, the excitement surrounding Sky Ferreira‘s work and name has remained intact even all these years later, where, despite several delays and no release date anywhere in sight, her sophomore album continues to stir up a buzz every time it is mentioned.
A prime example of quality over quantity, she has a limited yet solid track record that has allowed her the flexibility to take time away from music but retain respect and admiration from those who have patiently supported her work throughout her career.
While she made a name for herself on Myspace during the 2000s, her audience started to multiply substantially once she signed a record deal and began releasing her music in a more structured manner. Ferreira was turning heads from the very beginning of her career, but it was only when she teamed up with Devonté Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, and Ariel Rechtshaid on ‘Everything is Embarrassing’ that she truly blew up, which, to date, is still her most successful song and is widely regarded as one of the era’s defining tracks.
The unfortunate part, however, is that it also resulted in a fallout between her and Hynes over who deserved credit for the song’s colossal popularity. It’s not often that you hear artists falling out over a successful venture, but it so happened that the hit that turned her into a star also fractured her relationship with co-songwriter Hynes.
As the story goes, the collaboration was the product of his sending her a demo, which she then altered lyrically and structurally with Rechtshaid. While all three of them have always officially been listed as songwriters of the tune, Hynes apparently took umbrage with Ferreira taking ownership of the song.
During a 2014 interview with The Guardian, she explained, “He wrote the demo, and I’ve always given him credit; all I said was that the song wouldn’t have been made without me on it. I think it’s a shame because Dev’s really talented and he’s my friend. Well, was my friend, it’s kinda sad that we can’t be [friends] now.”
Although the exact details are unclear, it seems as though Hynes attached a lot of value to conceiving the song while she believed that reworking it was just as praiseworthy, and while its impact is indisputable, since the demo was never officially released, it’s tough to assess how different it was from the final product.
The synth-pop blockbuster premiered through Pitchfork back in 2012, and immediately became a sensation online and beyond, with several outlets hailing it one of the best releases of the 2010s, ultimately becoming a major win for artists who were trying to establish themselves through the internet at the time. Even today, it plays a key role in reminding fans why Ferreira is worth the wait ten-plus years after the release of her first album.
‘Everything is Embarrassing’ instantly positioned her for fame, and she was finally able to release her debut LP the following year to critical acclaim, enjoying further success via Night Time, My Time. However, one of the greatest ‘what ifs’ in recent years, her split from Hynes is tough to come to terms with, and we can only hope that the two eventually reconcile and cook up more gems.
