Irish carrier Aer Lingus may close its operational hub at Manchester Airport, the firm has announced.
It’s believed the decision could potentially impact around 200 positions, with a statement confirming the organisation has begun consultation talks with trade unions.
Aer Lingus runs long-distance services from Manchester to New York JFK, Barbados and Orlando in Florida, alongside connections to Dublin and Belfast. However, the carrier stated its Manchester long-distance operational profit performance “continues to significantly trail behind that of Aer Lingus’ Irish long-haul operating margin”.
The organisation has confirmed it has conducted meetings with personnel, reports the Manchester Evening News. Aer Lingus introduced its long-distance services from Manchester in 2021. Any shutdown would result in the termination of its connections from Manchester to Disney World in Orlando.
In a statement, Aer Lingus said: “Aer Lingus can confirm that the company met with staff at its Manchester base to brief them on the performance of the base.
“Despite all of the work and best efforts of the team, the Manchester long-haul operating margin performance continues to significantly lag behind that of Aer Lingus’s Irish long-haul operating margin.
“This situation has prompted a necessary consideration of the long-term viability of the Manchester base. Join the North Wales Live WhatsApp community group where you can get the latest stories delivered straight to your phone
“Colleagues at the Manchester base were advised that Aer Lingus will now enter into a collective consultation process with their representatives. This process will explore all the options in respect of the base, however, staff were also advised that it will also include the possibility of a base closure.
“We acknowledge and fully appreciate that this is an uncertain and difficult time for colleagues based in Manchester and we will work closely with the management team and the staff in Manchester over the coming weeks, ensuring that they are kept fully informed and supported.”
The announcement comes after industrial action by Aer Lingus cabin crew at Manchester Airport over a wages dispute. Around 130 staff members downed tools earlier this month, alleging a pay gap between themselves and their colleagues in Ireland.
Aer Lingus, Ireland’s national airline, was established in 1936. Additional information has not been disclosed. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox
