Three people were rushed to hospital

A man has died after a single-vehicle crash on the A303 yesterday (Saturday, November 22).

All three emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to a crash on the major A-road between Sparkford and Wincanton in Somerset just after 2pm.

SomersetLive reports Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said a vehicle crashed off the road near Compton Pauncefoot and ended up in a ditch, trapping four people.

A man in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene and his family are being supported by specially trained officers, police have said.

Three other people were taken to hospital, where one person remains in a critical condition after suffering life-threatening injuries.

Another person remains in hospital but their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The third person has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with dashcam footage or information which may assist the police is asked to contact the force.

A statement from Avon and Somerset Police said: “We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision on the A303 yesterday (Saturday 22 November).

“Officers were called at 2.15pm to the A303 between Sparkford and Wincanton following reports of a single-vehicle collision.

“Sadly one person, a man in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time and we are offering them support via one of our specially-trained family liaison officers.

“Three other people were taken to hospital, one of whom is believed to be in life-threatening condition.

“One remains in hospital with non-life-threatening or life changing injuries and the third has since been discharged to recover at home.

“The road was closed in both directions while emergency services responded. If you were in the area around 2-2.15pm and witnessed the collision, or have any dashcam footage which could aid our enquiries, please call 101 and quote reference 5225328170 .”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Three fire engines were sent to a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision on the A303 near Wincanton.

“On arrival crews confirmed that this single vehicle had left the road and into a ditch, with four people trapped inside.

“A further fire engine and heavy rescue unit were also mobilised. Crews assisted Ambulance crews in releasing the casualties and the incident has been left in hands of the Police.”
