Get Free Books in Upper Brook Street closed on Friday after being handed its notice earlier this month.

The search for a new premises in the town has not yet yielded results but the shop is confident that a new location will be found.

Earlier this year, the team gave away their 50,000th book, but less than three months later, the shop will shut in its current location for good.

Lucy Mortlock, the lead volunteer at the Ipswich branch, said on Friday: “After a fantastic and highly successful year in Upper Brook Street, charity bookshop, Get Free Books Ipswich has closed for the final time.

“We had planned to close at 2pm, but it was continuously busy all day and in the end we didn’t shut the doors until after 4pm. Instead of the usual three per person, by the end customers could take as many as they could carry.

“The total amount of books that were rehomed for this week alone was over 3,500 books with the remaining stock and bookcases now being packed up and stored until we have a new place.

“We have had lots of lovely comments from customers wishing us well and hoping we won’t be away for too long. We really appreciate the support and will find a new location as soon as we can.

“We are so thankful to all the volunteers involved for their help and hard work and those who are hoping to keep up with any news should follow us on our Facebook or Instagram pages.”
