TransPennine Express is looking for up to 53 new conductors to join its network across the North of England in the next year. The train operator has said that it is actively encouraging people with no rail industry experience to apply for the job opportunities.
A total of five roles each could be available based at TPE depots across the North, including Newcastle Central Station as well as Cleethorpes, Sheffield, Preston, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Airport, Liverpool, Hull and Scarborough. A further eight would be based in York.
The roles are part of an ongoing process by the train operator to recruit as and when existing staff members retire, earn promotions, or join another company. Successful applicants will join the train operator’s talent pool, and will be first in line as soon as new jobs open up.
New recruits will have to pass rigorous interview tests focusing on concentration and customer service, as well as undertake around three months training to become a qualified conductor. More information can be found at tpexpresscareers.co.uk.
The operator is offering a salary of £27,877 per year which increases to £36,411 once qualified, as well as other benefits including free and discounted rail travel. The deadline to apply is Monday, December 8.

He added: “We want our workforce to reflect the communities we serve and we’re proud to include people from all walks of life in our team. So, if you are thinking of changing careers or are just starting working life, this could be the role for you.”
The job description for the Trainee Conductor Talent Pool based in Newcastle says that the company is looking for “a natural people person who thrives under pressure”. They must also be flexible and ready for irregular shifts.
