Ruben Amorim believes Manchester United deserved to lose against Everton. Amorim hit out at the lack of “intensity” during his press conference and admitted his side “didn’t play well”.

United were undefeated in five Premier League games before facing Everton and were handed a huge advantage when Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane.

Everton opened the scoring through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 29th minute. United were outplayed in the first half, despite having an extra player on the pitch, and Amorim had made three changes before the hour mark in an attempt to spark a response from his players.

United struggled to break Everton down in the closing stages. Jordan Pickford made a decent save to deny Joshua Zirkzee, but the Toffees were able to see out the game with just 10 men.

Amorim said: “Frustration, disappointment about the way we played the game. They were the better team, with 11 they defend really well for 70 minutes with 10 men. I think we deserved to lose.

“We didn’t play well, we didn’t play with the right intensity. We talk about this a lot [about what went wrong], I know which point we are at the moment, I have that feeling during this run.

“We are not there, not even near the point we should be to fight for the best positions in the league. We need to be perfect to win games and we were not.”

Discussing whether some of his players did not show the intensity he wants, Amorim responded: “We need to find a way, I don’t like to say we can, we show and then it is one game by week.

“It is not back-to-back, so we need to be ready, 20 minutes in the game, red card for opponent, we need to win that, no matter what. We have a lot to do and we are going to do it.”

Amorim continued: “When I say it is my responsibility, it is my responsibility to explain the game. Today, it is not one mistake of one individual. When we see the results of the weekend, we should get on the pitch with a different excitement.

Old Trafford was there, we were going to make a big step up, and we were not ready. These five weeks, everyone was praising our evolution, and I am always saying the same things, we are not near.”

United wasted a chance to move up the table against Everton. “I feel afraid of returning this feeling of last season,” said Amorim. “That is my biggest concern, we need to work together and we need to be better.”

United will take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park next in the Premier League.
