A reporter claims Liverpool are not only looking to sign a new centre-back and winger in January, but could also make a third addition in a surprise position.

Signing too many new players in one go has been blamed by some for Liverpool’s disastrous start to the current campaign. However, it’s important to note Liverpool did wave goodbye to numerous stars and the ranks did need replenishing.

Indeed, Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez were among those to depart. Tragically, Diogo Jota passed away.

Liverpool intend to spend again in January in an attempt to rescue their ailing season. It’s no secret they’re looking at Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo.

But according to a shock new update from Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool could also sign a new striker.

‘Liverpool are definitely planning additions in January,’ declared Plettenberg on X.

‘They are looking for a winger who can make an immediate impact, with Antoine Semenyo among the candidates.

‘They are also monitoring strikers with favourable market conditions, and they have an eye on centre-backs as well, including Marc Guehi.’

Liverpool don’t need another striker

Much has been made about Liverpool signing two top class strikers (Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike), for a system that only plays one up top.

But as mentioned, Liverpool’s ranks reduced in number over the summer and in the striker position specifically.

Nevertheless, signing a third striker to compete for one spot would come as the shock of all shocks. Isak will prove his worth given time, while Ekitike has settled the quickest of all Liverpool’s summer recruits.

What’s more, neither Isak (Sweden) or Ekitike (France) will be absent during AFCON around te turn of the year.

Only Mohamed Salah will depart to represent Egypt, with that absence covered by Federico Chiesa, Rio Ngumoha, or even Semenyo.

The idea of Liverpool spending big on another striker is near-unthinkable. But why would the Reds spend lightly on a player who’ll slot in as a distant third choice and rarely play?

The move doesn’t appear to make much sense, though little of what Liverpool have done since the season began has.
