Just one wicket down and with a lead of 105 in the second innings – England were in the box seat to win the first Test of the Ashes in Perth.
However – what came next was a disastrous collapse – with a slew of poor shot selections seeing the visitors lose their next nine wickets for just 99 runs.
As a result – Australia required 205 runs in the fourth and final innings to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Although the hosts struggled in their first innings with a measly score of 132 – you can’t afford to give a champion side like Australia an opening.
That was proven in their second innings – as big-game player Travis Head produced one of the greatest performances with the bat in Ashes history.
Bazball, a swing and a myth: England widen to 5/1 to win the Ashes after dismal display in Perth
Head – who put his hand up to open in place of the injured Usman Khawaja – battered the English bowlers around the park en route to 123 runs off just 83 balls.
Additionally, his century came off just 69 balls, which is the second fastest in Ashes history and joint-sixth fastest is Test history.
Following England’s capitulation and Head’s heroics across the final two innings – the odds have changed considerably when looking at the betting lines.
Conversely, England are sizeable outsiders at 5/1 to win back the urn, while a drawn series is the widest in the market at 9/1.
The next match is a pink-ball Test at the Gabba in Brisbane starting December 4 – a match England enter as 2/1 underdogs.
Meanwhile, Australia are a short 8/15 to go up 2-0 in the series, while a draw is a wide 12/1 odds.
