Keir Starmer has claimed the Conservatives want to “means test” the state pension.

The Prime Minister made the comment in the House of Commons on Wednesday.

It comes amid increased discussion around the future of the state pension and calls from some economic experts to rethink the triple lock policy.

The triple lock ensures the pension rises each year by whatever is highest out inflation, wage growth and 2.5%.

Some experts and commentators believe the triple lock is too expensive and unsustainable, and that the pension rate rises by too much each year.

There have even been suggestions the pension could be “means tested”.

Labour has said it is committed to keeping the triple lock until at least the end of the current Parliament.

Starmer has seized on previous comments previously made by the Conservative leadership suggesting possible changes to the pension if the party returns to Government in future.

Answering a question on frozen rail prices, the PM said: “That’s only possible because we have a Labour Government investing in Great British Railways and putting more money in the pockets of passengers.

“Contrast our approach with the Leader of the Opposition who says the minimum wage is a burden, she thinks, and she wants to means test the state pension.”

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch did not respond to the Prime Minister’s claims around the state pension.
