Highworth Town Council has secured a commitment to notify the public before any development of the green space near the A361 is carried out.
Swindon Borough Council will now inform residents prior to any formal disposal or development of the Highworth Golf Course, following legal action initiated by the town council.
This agreement means the public can submit comments before any changes are made to the site.
The Highworth council had sought legal advice about a potential Judicial Review regarding the future of the golf course.
However, the advice suggested that any formal decision to dispose of the land was premature, meaning a Judicial Review would likely not succeed at this stage.

Despite this, the legal action has resulted in SBC agreeing to notify the public through a newspaper advertisement before any land transfer or sale.
This is because the golf course is considered public open space.
A spokesperson for Highworth Town Council said: “While the legal advice shows we are not yet at a stage where we can challenge SBC through Judicial Review, the very act of beginning this process has brought results and shown our clear intentions moving forward should SBC continue to a planning application.”
The town council has assured residents it is ready to act immediately if the process of disposing of the land is formally initiated, in order to preserve the green and open character of the golf course.
The town council is currently waiting for a full response from SBC to its follow-up legal letter and is keeping a close eye on all developments.
The spokesperson added: “Highworth Town Council emphasises that the pressure remains.
“If the disposal process is formally triggered, HTC is ready to act immediately to defend the green, open character of the former golf course and represent the views of local residents.”
Swindon Borough Council is currently at the pre-planning stage of putting together a proposal to build 700 homes on part of the former leisure facility and leave an area the size of the Lawns as green space.
