Round 20 is halfway completed with six sides in Super League action this weekend, and the rest will finish up the round over the next week.
However, despite these sides now getting a week off, it could’ve come at a cost for three sides, with a handful of injuries from across the three games.
Thursday night saw Wakefield Trinity pick up a 15-14 win over Leeds Rhinos, thanks to a final-minute drop goal courtesy of halfback Mason Lino. That win moved them back into the top six, leapfrogging Hull FC.
Wigan Warriors might not be playing their best rugby of the season, but it was still enough to see off Catalans Dragons on Friday night. A 28-18 victory saw them retain their second-placed spot in Super League to just two points behind league leaders Hull KR, who play this coming weekend.
Saturday afternoon’s fixture saw a spirited Huddersfield Giants side claim a 30-14 win at Hull FC, but it looks like the Giants’ injury crisis isn’t improving any time soon.
Despite there being just three games on, there was a handful of injuries across Super League and here’s a round-up of them.
Super League round 20 part 1 concerns
A win over the Rhinos might’ve been one of the highlights of the season for Daryl Powell’s Wakefield side, but there were causes for concern. Cam Scott suffered a knee strain during the victory, but Powell didn’t seem too concerned about the longevity of the injury. Josh Griffin also picked up an ankle knock during the game, but played on.
The Rhinos also lost halfback Jake Connor to an HIA during the second half, which he later failed. Due to the way this round is split across two weekends, he won’t miss Leeds’ next game in two weeks’ time against Leigh Leopards on Thursday 7th August. However, they will be without young winger Alfie Edgell to a foot injury. He will go for a scan this week, and coach Brad Arthur shared that it could be a fracture or a ligament, meaning he’ll be missing for a lengthy period, potentially even season-ending.
Saturday’s game saw Huddersfield Giants lose another duo to injury, as seemingly, when it rains, it pours over in Huddersfield. Whilst player of the match Tui Lolohea played on with a quad injury, winger Adam Swift had to be taken off due to a groin injury. Boss Luke Robinson seemed less than optimistic post-match, insinuating that both could be out for their next game, hosting Catalans Dragons on Saturday 9th August.
Their opponents, Hull FC, also suffered an injury blow, with Jordan Rapana failing his HIA. However, again with the round being stretched over two weeks, he’s likely to be back when the Black and Whites host Salford Red Devils on Sunday 10th.
