Which AirPods are right for you?

AirPods are almost synonymous with earbuds these days, so it’s no surprise they are best sellers during every big sales event. That hasn’t changed for Black Friday, as we’ve seen discounts on the AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Max throughout November. However, the recent arrival of the new AirPods Pro 3 can make choosing a model confusing.

We have a complete guide that answers the question “What are the best AirPods to buy today?“, but here’s a quick breakdown of the different buds.

AirPods 4: your standard AirPods. This is the cheapest model currently available. They offer fun, dynamic sound, a secure fit without ear tips and excellent spatial audio. Was AU$219 now AU$160 at JB Hi-Fi.

AirPods 4 (ANC): if you’d like to avoid the in-ear tips common with other earbuds and the AirPods Pro, this model provides the same experience as the regular 4’s with impressive noise-cancelling. Down 14% to just AU$299 AU$258 on Amazon.

AirPods Pro 2: while the new Pro 3’s have arrived, we think the AirPods Pro 2 are still the best you can buy. Regularly discounted (though harder to find, now), they provide top-tier sound and noise cancellation, with a massive feature list and long-lasting battery. Just AU$349 AU$329 on MWave for Black Friday.

AirPods Pro 3: The newest AirPods on the market boast some handy features over the predecessors like a heart-rate sensor and Live Translation. However, the overall experience is similar – and those new features have brought a price increase with them in Australia. For most people, we think the Pro 2 are still the better choice – if not the AirPods 4 (ANC). Down 5% to AU$429 AU$406 on Amazon.

The best streaming device on the market, for less

An Apple TV 4K on the ground.

It’s yet another Apple device that’s received a less-than exciting discount for Black Friday, but when it comes to the Apple TV 4K, we (happily) take what we can get.

Like the streaming service that now sounds even more similar after dropping the Plus from its Apple TV name, this device is – in my opinion at least – the best of its kind. While the Amazon Fire TV Sticks (and the more premium Fire TV Cube) offer an affordable route to upgrading a TV into a smart TV, their speed, navigation, and overall software experience can’t match that of the Apple TV 4K.

The biggest competitor to this device is the Google TV Streamer. And, even at more than AU$100 cheaper than Apple’s box, we’d recommend the latter over the former.

Obviously, the choice comes down to how entrenched you are in the Alexa / Google / Apple markets. However, purely on hardware, the Apple TV 4K is more powerful, with a better processor, more storage, AirPods support, and home-theatre-specific features.

As smart home devices, we think Apple falls behind the others. In general terms, it’s not so much a case of picking a device as picking a platform. However, if you’re simply looking for the optimal device to watch the best streaming services on, the Apple TV 4K is the clear choice.

“The best Mac ever” is discounted for Black Friday

While we’d been hoping to see bigger savings, it’s hard to ignore any discount on what we the best Mac ever”.

That’s right the beloved Apple Mac mini (M4) is down by AU$76.60 at Mwave – now just for just AU$922.40.

Rarely discounted in Australia, this is one of the cheapest prices we’ve seen since some pretty enticing pre-launch deals. Holding a prime slot in our guide to the best desktop PCs (and the best mini PCs too), this absolute powerhouse of a device already offers immense value at its original price – making this discount all the more appealing.

Earning a very rare (especially when it comes to PCs and laptops!) five stars in our Apple Mac mini (M4, 2024) review, we put things simply – “smaller, faster, better”. If you’re entrenched in MacOs and want to ditch (or use in conjunction with) your laptop for an at-home or in-office PC, the Mac mini is an easy recommendation.

Snag yourself a gift card when bobbing for Apple’s

Apple Black Friday

While we’ve enjoyed some Apple discounts throughout November – and some really special deals on iPads, AirPods and older iPhone models once Black Friday properly hit – we’d been holding out hope that once Apple itself got on board, the iPhone 17 might see a price cut.

Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. In fact, Apple hasn’t discounted any of its devices for Cyber Weekend. The only deal you’ll get is a gift card worth up to AU$400 with the purchase of an eligible device.

We know that many prefer to buy directly from Apple for peace of mind – so here’s a quick breakdown of some of our favourite offers:

iPhone 16e: AU$80 gift card
iPad (A16): AU$80 gift card
Apple Watch SE 3 and Series 11: AU$80 gift card
Apple Watch Series 11: AU$80 gift card
iPhone 16 or 16 Plus: AU$120 gift card
iPad Air: AU$160 gift card
M4 Mac mini: AU$160 gift card
MacBook Air M4 (15-inch): AU$320 gift card

What happened to the HomePod?

HomePod mini

There’s been so much noise about a new HomePod being released, one with a display, but nothing really comes out of it. How long do we have to wait for Apple to catch up with the likes of the Echo Show?

Well, I’m not actually here to whinge about a new HomePod, but to complain about the lack of HomePod discounts. OK, so the HomePod mini isn’t all that expensive even at full price, but c’mon! Maybe a 5% price drop? No, let’s make that 10%. I honestly cannot remember the last time I saw a ‘deal’ on a HomePod, even the Gen 2. Oh well, at least there’s discounts on the latest Apple Watches!

The best iPad for students

iPad Air M3

Our guide to the best tablets on the market is filled with iPads, from the laptop-replacing iPad Pro to the 2025 baseline model that’s suitable to basically everyone. However, if you’re a student that’s thinking an iPad might be what you need to take your studies to the next level – or maybe even that you’ll save some cash by using it instead of a laptop – we have two very easy recommendations for you.

Lets be honest, the worst part of uni (and high school, to a lesser extent) is the seemingly never-ending amount of things there are to read. And, while it’s doable, neither your phone or laptop are perfect for reading on. But, when it comes to actually researching and writing, you need an actual computer to get things done.

Well, the M3 iPad might be exactly what you’re after – offering all the benefits of a thin, light tablet, with plenty of power for almost any need.

We awarded it 4.5-stars in our 11-inch iPad Air with M3 review, blown away by the value it offers. That value gets even better for Black Friday, as you can save more than AU$250 on it right now. Powerful, with a vibrant display and strong battery life, it’s the perfect addition to any bag going to work or school. And, if you connect a keyboard to it, it’s a mighty laptop replacement – though they aren’t cheap.

The best audio experience Apple users can get, for less

The AirPods Max propped up at a 3/4s angle in front of a pink background.

In our Apple AirPods Max review “the perfect headphones for Apple devotees” and you can save more than AU$200 on them this Black Friday.

Offering the best spatial audio on the market when paired with an Apple device, as well as incredible sound, top-tier comfort and brilliant noise-cancelling, there’s no doubting these headphones as some of the best wireless headphones.

However, they’re hard to recommend over competitors like the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones, who sound just as good and cost a lot less. That’s because, while the AirPods Max launched at just AU$899 (which is still more than most competitors), Apple has since hiked their price up to AU$999.

That’s why this current deal is so attractive, as we’ve rarely seen them drop below AU$900 since.

Upgrading on a budget? The iPhone 16e is for you

Apple iPhone 16e on blue background with don't miss text overlay

If you’re looking to upgrade from an older iPhone – say the iPhone SE or iPhone 12 or earlier – there’s few better ways to do so than the iPhone 16e.

Before I got my hands on it, I was convinced a discounted iPhone 15 was the best ‘budget’ iPhone to buy in 2025. However, the iPhone 16e quickly proved that wasn’t the case.

The iPhone 15 is the better choice for those who prioritise photo-taking, as the iPhone 16e offers only a single-lens fusion camera at its rear. However, we’d direct you to our best camera phones if quality snaps are what you’re after.

It also still sports the notch of the iPhone 14 and runs a 60Hz display. However, it matches (or beats) the regular iPhone 16 in terms of battery and display. Right now, you can save massively on it whether you’re buying outright or on a plan with the deals below.

Want to grab an iPad this Black Friday?

11th Gen iPad (A16) Review

The 11th generation iPad is basically just an updated version of the 2022 model, but that’s not a bad thing.

While it looks almost identical to its predecessor, in our Apple iPad 10.9-inch (2022) review, we applauded its new design (at the time) and its various colours as one of our favourite aspects. There’s a reason it lasted for years as the best iPad for most people.

There was no need for it to change, other than its performance lacking compared to its siblings and competitors – so Apple upgraded it with the A16 chip. This resulted in a 50% increase in speed, making it the top iPad to buy.

It doesn’t offer Apple Intelligence – the iPad mini is the cheapest tablet for that – but it’s a star when it comes to playing games, browsing the web, multitasking and even handwriting with the Apple Pencil.

Sadly the base model with 128GB storage is all gone, but if your budget can stretch, there is still stock of the 256GB and 512GB variants via the same listing, although please note that the 256GB is the LTE version.

The first discount on new Apple Watches

Apple Watch Series 11 Space Gray on TR banner

One of the biggest signs that Black Friday sales were officially here – other than every retailer screaming it at you through emails and text messages – is the discounts we’ve found on some of Apple’s latest products. Few more attractive than the Apple Watch SE 3 and Series 11 discounts on Amazon.

We think new Apple Watch SE is pretty clearly the best Apple Watch for most people and this deal makes it even easier to recommend at just AU$357. Well, that’s what our tester called it in our review. However, the Series 11 actually steals that title in our guide to the best Apple Watch, with the SE taking the budget option.

The SE 3 comes in two colours, while the Series 11 can be yours in seven different colourways. The Series 11 also boasts a larger (and brighter) display at 46mm / 42mm compared to the 44mm / 40mm Apple Watch SE 3. The more expensive model also boasts a few features its budget-friendly sibling does not, like Hypertension notifications.

However, which model is better isn’t clear cut. It depends on your needs. And, whichever you decide on, you’re getting a ton of value thanks to these deals.

Finally! We’ve found a deal on the iPhone 17

iPhone 17

Vodafone’s Black Friday sale is providing one of the first (and best) iPhone 17 deals since it launched in September – offering AU$504 in savings.

Right now, Vodafone’s SIM plans have had their data doubled for Black Friday. This means its small, medium and large plan now offer a whopping 120GB, 400GB and 800GB of monthly data. This will run for the entire length of your chosen contract. On top of that, all three are AU$14 p/m off the first 12 months of your contract.

However, when you pair said plans with an iPhone 17 – and iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air – on a 36-month plan, the AU$14 p/m discount extends over that three year period. So, while you don’t save on the handset itself, you’ll save over AU$500 on the SIM it’s paired with.

Six months of my favourite streaming service – 50% off

A Black Friday deals sign next to a TV with the Apple TV logo on it

While you can find basically everything at a discounted price this Black Friday, some of the best deals have been on streaming services.

An annual subscription to Disney+ is down 30% and you can get a month of Binge Premium for just AU$2, but the standout offer is 50% off Apple TV.

After increasing its prices by AU$3 up to AU$15.99 p/m, this deal will have you pay just AU$7.99 p/m for the next six months. That’s a saving of AU$48!

In the next few months, Apple TV will add F1: The Movie and Hijack season two in December, followed by Drops of God and the third season of Shrinking in January. This content expands an already strong library featuring acclaimed titles like Severance and The Studio—including the currently-running Pluribus.
