Hull KR have identified North Queensland Cowboys’ versatile forward Karl Lawton as their latest potential new recruit following the departure of Kelepi Tanginoa last week.

The exit of Tanginoa to Warrington Wolves has opened up some salary cap space and a quota spot – and the Robins are keen to sign the 29-year-old for next season – who can play in the hooker, back row, and loose-forward positions.

As it stands, the Cowboys are yet to agree to Lawton’s release. However, if that stumbling block is overcome, Rovers are confident they can strike a deal to sign the player who has extensive NRL experience.

The departure of Micky McIlorum at the end of last season has left Rovers a hooker down on last season, putting a lot of pressure on Jez Litten with Bill Leyland still developing his repertoire after a promising first season at the club.

The signing of Lawton would ease that depth concern and provide Litten with cover after an outstanding 2025 campaign. He can also cover the back row, which is a position they have also lost stock in following Tanginoa’s departure.

Meanwhile, Lawton has over 100 games of NRL experience to his name. He made his debut for the Gold Coast Titans in 2016 and, in addition to his current club, the Cowboys, has played for the New Zealand Warriors and Manly Sea Eagles.

Of course, Rovers are looking to defend their Super League and Challenge Cup titles next season. They have signed the likes of Tom Amone, Jordan Dezaria, and Jack Charles ahead of 2026 and began pre-season training last week.
