When she was asked to store cocaine in her home, Jennifer Kenworthy had one request for her daughter. She didn’t want money.

Nor did the 54-year-old want a slice of the criminal empire controlling the flow of drugs across the north west. Her needs were comparatively simple.

For her part in the huge conspiracy, Jennifer asked her daughter for a ‘crumb’ of cocaine as payment.

Both she and her 31-year-old daughter, Rebecca, housed the large quantities at their properties. They were among nine others who were involved in the supply of class A drugs.

This week, the mother and daughter have found themselves hauled before Manchester Crown Court. They were both ultimately handed community orders for their roles in the enterprise.

The conspiracy, the court heard, was run like a ‘well-organised conspiracy’ by Bobby Vernon, 40, who gave instructions to others and worked alongside his uncle Darren Rae, 52, who was involved in finding people’s homes to store the drugs and paraphernalia.

Jack Tolley, 33, who acted as ‘operations manager’ was involved in deliveries of cash and drugs, and would partake in ‘meetings’ with Vernon and Rae. Alongside him Daniel Nosey, 33, found addresses to store the drugs and helped out with the logistics of running the business.

Rebecca Kenworthy was in a relationship with Tolley. She claimed he had brought the drugs to her home in Harpurhey, and whilst allowing for them to be stored there, she didn’t know the sheer scale.

Police went on to find 26 kilos of cocaine in two safes.

Her mum, Jennifer Kenworthy, also stored drugs in her home, as did her partner, Gerald David, 55, Katie McCann, 28, and Alexandra Gregory, 37.

Addressing Jennifer Kenworthy, Judge Tom Gilbart said: “Your daughter was the girlfriend of Jack Tolley. You agreed to allow your premises to be used and knew it was being used for criminal purposes.

“You asked your daughter for a ‘crumb’ of the cocaine being stored. You went into this with your eyes open. You knew what kind of criminality you were assisting with.”

The court heard that Rebecca Kenworthy had supplied a basis of plea document to the court, in which she accepted wrongdoing but challenged some of the facts. In it she said that she did not know the quantity of drugs involved, and that Jack Tolley had brought them to the house. Prosecutors did not challenge the basis, and she was sentenced in that respect.

Addressing McCann, David, Gregory and the mum and daughter, Judge Gilbart said: “I understand what you did may be less serious [than what the others did], but it still remains serious. The illegal trade brings immense suffering only after foolish people like you are willing to assist as you do.”

Summarising the mitigation for the defendants, the judge said that Rebecca Kenworthy expressed ‘regret’, whilst her mum took responsibility for what she did.

Rebecca Kenworthy, Jennifer Kenworthy and Gerald David, all of Whittaker Lane, Rochdale, were each handed a 12 month community order, 150 hours unpaid work and 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Katie McCann, of Benton Street, Harpurhey; and Alexandra Gregory, of Oswald Street, Oldham; were handed a 12 month community order and 150 hours unpaid work. Gregory must complete 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days, and McCann must complete 20 days.

Rebecca Kenworthy previously pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. Jennifer Kenworthy and Gerald David pleaded guilty to permitting the use of their premises for the supply of class A drugs. Katie McCann and Alexandra Gregory pleaded guilty to permitting the use of their premises for the supply of class A and class B drugs.
