Donna Mitchell, who is a district nurse team leader at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, was selected to take part in a nine-month development programme run by the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS) alongside 18 other nurses from across the country.
On Friday, November 28, Donna was awarded with the Queen’s Nurse title after successfully completing the programme, which involves residential and online workshops and aims to promote health equity and inclusion across Scotland.
Each year the Queen’s Nurse title is awarded to around 20 community nurses and midwives who are chosen to embark on the development programme.
Alongside a certificate signed by Her Majesty the Queen, Donna was also presented with a Queen’s Nurse badge designed by Silversmiths Ortak and a specifically commissioned Harris Tweed sash.
Dr Sarah Doyle, QNIS chief executive and nurse director, said: “QNIS is delighted to award the Queen’s Nurse title to these fantastic nurses.
“Community nurses and midwives occupy a unique position, working as they do in the heart of communities, championing the cause of those who are marginalised, helping those facing real adversity.
“They do vital work every day.
“The Queen’s Nurse Development Programme supports participants to build their confidence, inspiring them to find and lead creative responses to the challenges they face, and to improve the provision of health and social care in Scotland.”
