Yukon Wildlife Cams on Wednesday shared footage of a black bear scent-marking a tree with a back scratch, only to have a grizzly bear claim the tree the same way five days later.

The footage reveals a behavior intended to leave scent for other bears, or simply to satisfy an itch.

Back scratches are impressive because they reveal a bear’s true size, and Yukon Wildlife Cam’s footage is reminiscent of perhaps its most striking scent-marking footage to date, captured in August 2021.

The footage shows an enormous grizzly bear enjoying a scratch before charging ferociously toward the camera in slow motion, head lurching and massive claws on display.

It also provides a sense of what an attacking grizzly bear might look like, and inspired one of the top comments: “Can you imagine standing where the trail camera is?”
