Run by SpaMedica, a provider of NHS ophthalmology services, the hospital at Grove House on Millers Close offers treatment for eye conditions including cataracts and posterior capsule opacification.
Treatments are set to be faster than the national target of 18 weeks.
Less than 75 per cent of ophthalmology patients in Dorset are currently treated within this time.
Samantha Christiansen, the hospital manager, said: “By offering timely, high-quality ophthalmic care in a dedicated local facility, SpaMedica Dorchester will help to reduce elective backlogs and enable more patients to receive treatment close to home, in line with national healthcare priorities.
“Working in close partnership with the NHS, we’re aiming to make treatment for common eye conditions more accessible for our community.”
Approximately 110,200 of Dorset’s population are over 65, with up to 30 per cent of this age group potentially requiring cataract surgery.
Thousands of people are expected to benefit from the new facility.
SpaMedica is also offering a free door-to-door transport service with no mileage restrictions for patients who need assistance getting to and from their appointments.
Complimentary parking is also available on site and SpaMedica offers the service to patients who need assistance getting to and from their appointments.
