Yet nothing of his motives beyond simple profit or his origins have been revealed until now.

Absolute Joker’s Origin Reveals More About Monstrous Batman Villain

Written by Scott Snyder, with art by Jock, Absolute Batman #15 is entirely focused upon Absolute Joker. The series thus far has highlighted how Joker was responsible for funding the prison/laboratory known as Ark M. He also financed the activities of terrorists like Bane and Black Mask in secret.

Their activities attracted the attention of covert agent Alfred Pennyworth. The old spy began investigating the money behind the mayhem, trying to understand why someone so wealthy would invest in sowing chaos. In the opening scene of Absolute Batman #15, Pennyworth begins to reveal what little he has learned about Absolute Joker and his past to Bruce Wayne.

The first eight pages of Absolute Batman #15 may be viewed below.

What is Absolute Joker’s origin?

Pennyworth’s history reveals that Absolute Joker’s real name is Joseph Grimm V. He is the latest in a long line of magnates, all based in Gotham City, dating back to the late 19th century. Beyond the shared name, every Joseph Grimm expanded the family fortune in some aspect of the entertainment industry.

First came Joseph Grimm I; a clown who turned his success in vaudeville into a career as a theater owner and producer. Secondly, Jack Grimm Jr. expanded the family firm into films and television. Thirdly came Jack Grimm III, who was a pioneer in cable television. Fourthly came Jack Grimm IV, who made his money in video games. Finally, there is Jack Grimm V, who is approaching trillionaire status thanks to his investments in on-line gaming and computer hardware.

On paper, there is nothing truly sinister about Absolute Joker or his family. Indeed, they have a long history of philanthropy. They are also noted for being particularly generous in regards to children’s charities. However, previous issues have confirmed the man’s sinister side, though the method to his madness remains a mystery for now.

Absolute Batman #15 arrives in comic shops everywhere on December 10, 2025.
