Thanks to the Triple Lock, millions of pensioners will see up to an extra £472 added to their Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) State Pension which has been uprated by 4.1% from this year. But not all pensioners will receive the extra cash in their State Pension.

This increase amounts to a cash boost of over £6.9 billion, demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring pensioners enjoy a better retirement and support for low-income families as bills rise in April.

But Basic state pensioners, who are born before 1953 if women and 1951 if men, will miss out on a £470 boost thanks to the Triple Lock – with their payments being less.

In April 2025, the earnings link meant the state pension increased by 4.1%, making it worth £230.25 a week for the full, new flat-rate state pension (for those who reached state pension age after April 2016) – a rise of £472 a year.

But it is just £176.45 a week for the full, old basic state pension (for those who reached state pension age before April 2016) – a rise of £363 a year.

“Whilst just one of our bills – water – is rising by 47%! Most women pensioners aren’t on full New State Pension and no pensioner can live on a SP which is half the amount needed to live when deciding min wage!” one Facebook user fumed.

“£470 per annum pay rise, minus £300 winter fuel allowance which was a one off tax free payment = £170 per annum,” another fumed.

They added: “Also without the personal tax allowance being raised it will push more pensioners into paying tax on any private pension they may have, no matter how small.”

Another said: “Even with swings and roundabouts I’ve been conned. As a 1950s born woman I lost 6 yrs pension without knowing until the last minute then I finally started to get my pension last summer and you took the winter fuel allowance off me!

“I also get a tiny teachers pension which now takes me over your chronically low tax threshold ( £12k!). So now you’ll tax me too.

” Give with one hand, take back with the other! One big con.”
