A man was today fighting for his life in hospital after an assault in West Derby. Police said two men were arrested after reports of a “serious injury assault” in the early hours of this morning (Sunday).
Police were called to reports of members of the public giving CPR to a man who involved in a fight outside the Hare and Hounds public house. Images from the scene this morning show a forensics tent in the village. Officers arrived at the scene at around 12.45am and found a 33-year-old man with serious head injuries. He was taken to Aintree Hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Firefighters were also called to the scene where a 39-year-old man from Old Swan was arrested.
Aa 24-year-old man was arrested after he turned up at hospital with an injury to his face. Both men were arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault and will be interviewed by detectives.

Forensic examinations are being carried out at the scene and police are doing house-to-house inquiries. Detectives are also examining CCTV footage to determine what took place.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath, said: “This is a serious assault that has sadly left a 33-year man in a critical condition in hospital. The investigation is in its early stages and we are trying to establish the circumstances of what happened.
“We have spoken to a number of witnesses at the scene and are appealing for anyone with information to please come forward. If you were in the area last night and saw what happened or have any information, let us know as a matter of urgency.
“If you live in the area or were driving past at the time, I’d ask you to review your CCTV or dashcam footage to see if you captured anything that could help our investigation.”
He added: “I would like to take the opportunity to thank the caring members of the public who carried out vital CPR on the injured man at the scene prior to the emergency services attending.”
