Middlesbrough boss Kim Hellberg refused to completely rule out the possibility of raiding former club Hammarby during next month’s transfer window – with the Boro boss specifically asked about centre-back Victor Eriksson.

Hellberg is just two games into his Boro tenure and has made clear that he plans to use the next couple of weeks to assess the group and hand out opportunities before making definitive decisions on the transfer market.

With Boro in the midst of a defensive injury crisis, it might ordinarily be an obvious area for improvement when the transfer window opens in January.

However, Boro have one, possible two, defenders arriving next month already, with Adilson Malanda and Lukas Engel returning at the end of their respective MLS loan spells.

But if Hellberg were look towards his former squad in Stockholm for new Boro players, Eriksson seems an interesting bet.

Eriksson played under Hellberg at two different clubs, starting Varnamo. In their season and a half together at Hammarby, Eriksson was a stalwart for Hellberg, missing only two games.

During a sit down interview with Swedish broadcaster Ola Wenstrom, for his Youtube documentary on his channel WTV.

Initially asked about Eriksson, the new Boro boss somewhat avoided the question, explaining how recruitment works at Boro – with Kieran Scott as head of football ultimately recommending players to him based on the work of Boro’s scouts.

As Ola reminded Hellberg he’d not answered the question on Eriksson, the 37-year-old smiled before retorting: “Of course, Victor Eriksson could be a good name, but we shall see.”

Asked if that meant he wasn’t ruling out a move for the 25-year-old defender next month, Hellberg concluded: “You can never do that, of course.”

It remains to be seen whether Boro could/would make a move later in the year. The defender has previously been linked with Celtic.
