Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in signing Bologna’s Santiago Castro, but Sean Dyche’s team face competition for the striker from Inter Milan and Aston Villa.
The Reds had the sixth-highest spend in the Premier League over the summer transfer window as Nuno Espirito Santo looked to bolster his squad for European football. They splashed £205m, more than traditional big-six clubs like Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, with the club struggling in the league and having seen three different managers take charge in the early part of the season, Forest may look to invest again in January.
Castro has emerged as a potential candidate for the Tricky Trees, according to Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb. The 21-year-old has led the line for a Bologna side pushing for a European spot in Serie A and hoping to progress deep into the Europa League.
The report goes on to add that Forest have an official over in Italy watching Castro’s performances. The scout is said to have ‘excellent relations’ with the Red’s after being involved with the summer transfer of Dan Ndoye.
Castro has been noted for his physical presence up front, strong work-rate and ‘instinctive finishing’, with scout Ben Mattinson comparing the youngster to Carlos Tevez.
He could be brought in to help solve Forest’s issues in attack. The club have the second-worst goals-per-match ratio in the league, ahead of only winless Wolverhampton Wanderers. They also sit in the bottom half for expected goals (xG).
European giants Inter Milan have shown interest in the forward, but Bologna’s asking price – between £35-£43m – is believed to have prevented Inter from submitting an official bid so far.
What could help Forest in a potential battle with Inter are the liquidity problems facing many Italian clubs. Historic sides such as Inter, Roma and Juventus are dealing with significant debts and outdated infrastructure.
That could allow Forest, if they view Castro as a serious target, to submit a competitive fee – something Inter may struggle to match at present. Aston Villa are also reportedly monitoring the 21-year-old as they consider strengthening after a quiet summer window.
Bologna are aware of the growing interest and are now looking to act. The club are said to be in talks with Castro over a new contract.
The Argentine is not only an appealing option due to his current ability but also his long-term potential. At just 21, he looks a strong prospect for any club. Now it’s up to Forest to decide whether to make a concrete move. The story does stay that is unlikely to happen in January as Bologna chase European qualification.
