A terraced house that has been painted entirely by hand has come on the market for a whopping £2 million. Over the last decade, British artist Emily Powell has transformed what was once an ordinary five-bed house into a living canvas, and it’s now up for sale for someone else to cherish.
The property is brimming with floor-to-ceiling artwork, all hand-painted by the 35-year-old. Every surface – from light switches to floorboards, bath tiles to the fridge – is adorned with her creations. The home in Brixham, Devon boasts around 400 square metres of deeply personal art spread across two floors, creating a walk-in painting experience.
There are intricate details throughout such as fishing boats which bob along the skirting board in the hallway, the kitchen table is set with painted plates, cups and a teapot, the cupboard under the stairs transforms into a swimming pool complete with ladder, and birds flutter throughout the house.

Each room is designed to evoke different emotions, from the cosy red lounge with fireplace tiles bearing family memories, to the circus-themed playroom populated by animals donning party hats. The upstairs hallway leading to the master bedroom is brightened by giant sunflowers, a nod to Powell’s summer residency on the Isles of Scilly, while her young child’s room features protective giant tigers.
Liverpool-born Powell will host a series of open-house tours before the property is sold, with approximately 400 members of the public expected to visit the installation this week. She has also committed to returning to the house every decade for the rest of her life to retouch the artwork, ensuring its preservation.

The property sale includes an extra 65 artworks that Powell has crafted during the last ten years, alongside 20 pieces of decorated furniture ranging from kitchen appliances to storage units and a children’s playhouse. “It took us so long to be able to buy our first house, which was completely bought with painting money from my pieces over the past 10 years,” explained Powell, who shares the home with her partner, child and cat.
“When we got here, we had been in rented accommodation for so long. It was such a special moment. I thought we would have beautiful carpets and polished ornaments but that didn’t happen at all. I think it was a couple of weeks before I decided to paint a tree on the back of the office door, then it grew really quickly.
“It has become a journey through different parts of my life. Each room has colour palettes to support your emotions. There are birds flying in memory of my late father and different scenes from my life, from the Arctic and Lake District to the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. When you walk into the house, on the doormat there is an homage to Matisse and artists who painted still life pieces of the home.”

Powell used five-litre containers of household paint, wielded with various brushes purchased from her neighbourhood DIY shop, to produce the artwork. She revealed how becoming a parent provided her with domestic time, particularly during evening hours, when she would take up her paintbrush to develop fresh creations influenced by life experiences.
“When you live inside one giant painting, there are so many angles you have to consider and colour combinations that shift through doorways or up the stairs,” she added.
Demand for the open-house tours proved overwhelming, with tickets selling out in just 24 hours and more than 500 people joining a waiting list. International visitors from the United States and Europe are expected to attend the tours, during which Powell’s kitchen will be transformed into a tea room serving treats from Devon-based High Tide Tea company.

Powell explained the motivation behind opening her doors: “I’ve had so many requests over the years to open the house up. I felt like I have finally finished it. We’ve chosen to put it on the market because it’s really important to me that this entire chapter is preserved. I don’t want to paint over what’s already here, I need to start a new chapter. This is an opportunity for people to have an entire capsule of art.”
International estate agents Chestertons who are marketing the property detailed: “Spanning 1,712sq ft across three floors, the five-bedroom, mid-terraced house effectively functions as a single, continuous canvas. It is one of the first known instances in the UK of a lived-in home, hand-painted in its entirety by the artist being offered for sale as a complete, immersive artwork.”
Riccardo Carrelli, overseeing the sale for Chestertons, described the property as a “fusion” of art and real estate. “The collection is a significant art investment at an early stage in the artist’s career,” Mr Carrelli added. He confirmed that viewings will be arranged outside of the open-house tours for those interested in purchasing the property. The £2 million guide price takes into account the combined value of the house, as well as the original artworks and furniture included in the sale.
