Over the next few days, the Geminids will reach their peak acitivity, and about 150 meteors will be visible per hour. But it will be necessary to follow several tips to observe this event in the best conditions.
Every year, there are numerous meteor showers that offer a unique spectacle if you manage to observe them. But over the next few days, the Geminids will reach their peak activity, and the show could be surprising.
It should be noted that the Geminids are different from other meteor showers that occur during the rest of the year. Indeed, the vast majority of them come from a comet that leaves dust in its path and penetrates into the atmosphere when the Earth passes through these clouds. But as for the Geminids, they come from an asteroid, which is rather surprising. Named 3200 Phaethon, it measures 6 km in diameter and behaves like a comet, leaving dust in its wake.
Nevertheless, the debris of this asteroid are larger than that of comets. In other words, when they cross the atmosphere, they produce more light and can sometimes offer a unique show.Â
The best time to observe the Geminids
Therefore, if you want to observe this meteor shower, you will have to do it during the night of December 13 to 14, 2025. At this moment, the Geminids will reach their peak activity, and it will be possible to see 150 meteors per hour, heading toward Earth at 35 km/s.
But be careful, because precautions must be taken into account, as was the case for the Taurids. You will need to stay away from any sources of light pollution in order to have a completely dark sky. In addition, you will need a clear and cloudless sky to fully enjoy this spectacle.
