Sir Chris Hoy has broken his leg in cycling accident which he described as the “worst crash I ever had”.

The six-time Olympic gold-winning cyclist, who announced in 2024 that he had terminal prostate cancer, is on crutches and “hobbling about”.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hoy, 49, revealed he was not “doing so well” in the aftermath of the crash but was now beginning to recover.

“I’ve smashed my leg up on the mountain bike. That’s the worst thing that’s happened recently,” he said. “You just don’t bounce like you do when you’re younger.

“It was a big one. I’m doing better now, I’m still on crutches, hobbling about.

“Worse things happen. I’ve been riding bikes for 43 years and it’s the worst crash I’ve ever had. I’m pretty lucky that’s the worst one I’ve had in all those years of riding.”

Hoy was speaking to Sky Sports as part of his involvement with the charity Prostate Cancer UK. At the World Darts Championship, which begins on Thursday, the sponsors, Paddy Power, will donate £1,000 to the charity for every 180 scored.

Sir Chris Hoy: I’m busy proving that life doesn’t stop

Hoy said he hopes to be back on stage at Alexandra Palace to present the trophy to the winner, as he did last year to Luke Littler.

“I’ve just had an unfortunate spill and it’s the way the cookie crumbles. I’m doing all right now. I wasn’t doing so well in the immediate aftermath of it, but looking forward to Christmas,” he said.

“You can trip walking up steps to your front door and hurt yourself. The point is I’m not a massive risk-taker, but I want to live my life and I want to make the most of it. None of us are here for ever so you want to make the most of the time you have and do the things you enjoy.”

Sir Chris Hoy’s story will worry a lot of men, but don’t panic

Hoy revealed that his cancer diagnosis was terminal in 2024 and said he had been given between two and four years to live. He has continued to cycle and do things he loves while also raising awareness about the disease.
