Gervonta Davis vs Shakur Stevenson is a fantasy fight that remains high on the wish list of many boxing fans.
The two lightweight rivals have been linked to a fight with one another for a number of years, but unfortunately it has never been able to come to fruition.
Davis is the current WBA lightweight champion, who had knocked out the likes of Ryan Garcia, Rolly Romero, Mario Barrios and Leo Santa Cruz before coming up against Lamont Roach in his last title defence back in March.
It was a surprise performance from Davis, as he was held to a majority decision draw against Roach. The pair were expected to rematch in August, but that has now been thrown into serious jeopardy and could no longer happen.
It could open the door for Stevenson to land a fight against Davis if the Roach bout isn’t able to go ahead. Stevenson was last in action earlier this month when he put in arguably a career-best performance to defeat William Zepeda by unanimous decision.
That saw him retain his WBC lightweight title, in a much improved effort after lacklustre displays against Josh Padley and Artem Harutyunyan prior to that.
One man who was in attendance for the Stevenson vs. Zepeda fight was legendary fighter and now promoter Oscar De La Hoya, and he has given his take on how he sees a showdown between ‘Tank’ and Stevenson going.
Speaking to Ring Champs With Ak & Barak, De La Hoya said that he believes Davis will win in destructive fashion.
“They’re different styles obviously. Shakur fights more on his back foot and fights on his back foot, fights tall. Throws one, two punches. Tank takes more risk. He goes forward more and has more power. I’m going to pick Tank by brutal knockout.”
De La Hoya isn’t the only big name to make his prediction, with former welterweight champion Shawn Porter also revealing his thoughts.
