Newcastle United are said to be tracking Gabriel Jesus as the Arsenal striker recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Jesus sustained the setback six-and-a-half months ago during an FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United. The former Brazil international scored seven goals across all competitions before the season-ending injury.

He remains sidelined but is back in the gym as part of his rehabilitation programme, and a return to action is due before the end of this year. However, even though pre-season will pass the player by, clubs are reportedly initiating contact, and Jesus appears very much in demand.

CaughtOffside credits Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur with an interest in the player’s situation. Barcelona, Flamengo, Inter and Palmeiras are also reportedly monitoring the striker’s recovery.

Arsenal’s new signing Viktor Gyokeres only seems set to limit opportunities for Jesus when fit this coming season. The striker started just six Premier League matches last term, often featuring as a substitute to replace Kai Havertz.

Benjamin Sesko is an option Newcastle are in talks to sign – with personal terms believed to have been agreed – while Yoane Wissa is also a target. Jesus could emerge as an alternative should either move not materialise but not until the winter transfer window as he recovers from injury.

It comes amid uncertainty over Alexander Isak’s future at St James’ Park. The Magpies haven’t given up hope of keeping Isak for another season, despite the striker’s absence from the pre-season tour to Asia.

Tottenham are also a club linked with Wissa, but Arsenal doing any deal with Spurs for Jesus seems highly unlikely. Players swapping one side of north London for another are rare; Rohan Ricketts, Sol Campbell and William Gallas are the only ones to have done so since the 1980s.

All of those were on free transfers, though, with Pat Jennings and Steve Walford in 1977 the last to do so for a fee. As such, Newcastle would seemingly have the edge should Jesus want to stay in the Premier League, as he did when leaving Manchester City three years ago.
