Aidan Sezer is backing himself to go up another level at Hull FC in 2026. The half-back, arriving from NRL club Wests Tigers last year, was one of the Black and Whites’ strongest performers last season but still believes he has more gears to go through.
Playing his best rugby league under John Cartwright, the skipper, who had full shoulder surgery in the off-season, is confident in the spine assembled, particularly John Asiata, who Sezer believes is the key to ensuring that Hull can go on and achieve their play-off goal this coming season.
“I enjoyed last season but I still feel like I can get better,” Sezer told Hull Live. “There is always room for growth and there are always improvements to be had.
“There is always improvement from the lessons you learn, and hopefully the boys in the one, six, seven, and nine jumpers can stay healthy, and then John Asiata being the key, I think that will help me and my game.
“He is such a calming influence on the ball with his passing. He allows me to play my game and he will be a big help for Jake (Arthur) too, as well as James Bell when he comes on. He just gives us more time and space.”
On Cartwright, who first coached the half-back in 2012 and brought the best out of the player again last year, Sezer continued: “I’ve always got along with Carty and he just brings the best out of me. He’s a coach that you want to play for.
“He’s a coach who also doesn’t beat around the bush, and he lets you know where you stand in terms of your own game. I think, for me, I’ve always worked well under him and hopefully my own game can improve now next year.”
Targeting a Super League play-off finish in 2026, Hull, with eight new recruits, are looking to go one step further after just missing out in 2025. The competition will play under the same finals format next year despite an increase to 14 teams, and the goal is very much the same again.
“It was really enjoyable and I really enjoyed my time here,” Sezer, who is contracted until the end of 2027, added on his first year at the club. “But it was also frustrating in a way too; we wanted to be playing in the play-offs and we didn’t, but I think if you look at the positives and how much growth we had as a team and as a club, and now with the new acquisitions we’ve brought in, there are only good things to look forward to.
“Hopefully, we have a clean bill of health next year. I’m confident and very ambitious about where this group can go.”
