Yakuza Dev 'Exploring a Solution' for Botched Kiwami PS5 Upgrade 1

It’s been over a week since Yakuza Kiwami re-released on the PS5, and we finally have an update on the game’s botched upgrade path.

For those who don’t know, anyone who owns the original digitally on the PS4 is supposed to be eligible for a $1.99 upgrade. But it doesn’t work, and SEGA has been silent about the issue.

While we were able to upgrade our copy of Yakuza Kiwami 2 without a hitch, the remake of the original game has been showing full-price for us. And we’re not alone: social media is full of people encountering the same issue.

Now, dev RGG Studio has finally put out a statement on X (or Twitter):

“We’re aware some players are experiencing difficulties with the owner discount for Yakuza Kiwami on PPS5. Rest assured we’re exploring a solution, but it will take some more time. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. We’ll continue to provide updates here. Thank you for your continued support of the Like a Dragon & Yakuza series.”

So, there’s no real solution from the studio here, but the acknowledgement alone is welcome.

To be fair to SEGA and RGG Studio, this isn’t the first game to fall foul to Sony’s oddball digital ownership system, and we imagine it won’t be the last.

But while the issue may largely fall at the feet of PlayStation’s archaic database, the devs need to communicate quicker when these issues occur. Taking a week to issue a statement on this very prevalent problem is pretty unacceptable.
