Following the passing of The Stone Roses bassist Gary ‘Mani‘ Mounfield in November, his cause of death has now been confirmed.

The Manchester musical icon, who also played in Primal Scream for many years, died at his home in Heaton Moor, Greater Manchester, on November 20th. He was 63.

The Manchester Evening News has now confirmed from Mounfield’s family that he died peacefully in his sleep due to respiratory issues that the long-standing lung condition, emphysema, had caused.

According to the same publication, Mounfield was not taken to the hospital due to being pronounced dead at the scene. Police are also not believed to have attended his home, as it was categorised as a non-suspicious death.

An invite-only memorial service is set to be held at Manchester Cathedral on December 22nd, which would be followed by a private committal service.

His brother, Greg, recently said on Facebook that his brother “passed away peacefully at his home in Heaton Moor” on November 20th, and described him as a “beloved husband to the late Imelda [and] the much loved father to George, Gene and Joe”, as well as “a loved son-in-law, nephew, cousin and good friend to man”.

Mounfield is survived by two children that he shared with his wife, Imelda, who tragically died in 2023 due to bowel cancer.

Following the news of Mani’s passing, the music world came together to honour his vast legacy with the official account for The Stone Roses leading the tributes on social media, writing, “RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for. X”.

Additionally, Oasis dedicated ‘Live Forever’ to their fellow Mancunian music legend at their concert in São Paulo on November 22nd.

Meanwhile, outside of music, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, told ITV News, “It’s like a punch to a stomach… He’s such a character and it’s so hard to get my head around the shock of him not being with us, but he will forever be a Manchester legend and a member of in my view the greatest band in my lifetime.”
