The latest Spider-Man 4 update is bad news for Peter Parker.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man 4, also known as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, arrives in United States theaters next summer. Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton, the film will once again see Tom Holland reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, while Zendaya and Jacob Batalon also return as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson and Ned Leeds.

What is the latest Spider-Man 4 update?

Earlier this year, scooper Daniel Richtman reported that Marvel was looking for a Harris Dickinson-type actor to play a role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Richtman has now reshared this news with an update, saying, “This was for MJ’s new boyfriend it would seem.”

Dickinson — known for starring in 2023’s The Iron Claw and 2024’s Babygirl, among other titles — has not been cast in Spider-Man 4, and none of the announced stars bear a significant resemblance to him, meaning it’s not clear who, if anyone, will be playing MJ’s new boyfriend in the movie. This is only a rumor at this time, meaning MJ having a boyfriend is a plot point that has not been confirmed by Marvel at this time.

It would, however, make sense, given that Spider-Man: No Way Home ended with Ned and MJ forgetting who Peter is. How they factor into Brand New Day remains to be seen, but MJ having a new boyfriend would be a logical storyline to include.

In addition to Holland, Zendaya, and Batalon, the cast of Spider-Man 4 includes Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion, Marvin Jones III as Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone, Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Trammell Tillman.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on July 31, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
