If you ask a group of Marvel fans who they would like to see return in Avengers: Doomsday, chances are that a portion of them would put forward Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff as their choice. The beloved character has been an integral, fan-favorite part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a decade now, but her significance increased during the Multiverse Saga when Wanda officially became the Scarlet Witch herself.

Although the hero-turned-antihero-turned-villain seemingly perished in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fans have been holding out hope for her to return in Avengers: Doomsday. After all, it’s unlikely that Marvel Studios would waste such an important character so soon after she became the Scarlet Witch. And yet, Olsen wasn’t announced as part of the cast for the upcoming movie.

Fans have been hoping that it’s all a big surprise (after all, we know that the cast announcement didn’t feature every major name who will appear in the movie) but a new update has seemingly ruled out that possibility for now.

New Elizabeth Olsen update likely rules out Wanda return for Avengers: Doomsday

Elizabeth Olsen’s Seven Sisters series, in which she stars alongside Cristin Milioti and J. Smith Cameron, has been officially ordered to series at Hulu. Olsen filmed the FX pilot episode in Vancouver back in May, at which point Avengers: Doomsday was filming in the UK, so she clearly wasn’t on set of the MCU film for its primary production. Now, there will be more Seven Sisters as the star will officially begin work on the series in the near-future. While that is undoubtedly wonderful news for Olsen, Milioti, Smith Cameron, and all involved, Marvel fans may now have to face the reality that Wanda might not be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday.

Whenever the MCU movie’s reshoots begin next year, Olsen may well be filming the Seven Sisters series. Moreover, if the series is successful and gets picked up for another season, that might also rule her out of any significant involvement in 2027 sequel Avengers: Secret Wars. Of course, that’s a far bit ahead in the future, but as Marvel fans understandably always look ahead to which titles are coming, you can bet that they’re doing it now.

Olsen has denied that she is starring in either Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, telling The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year (ahead of filming the Seven Sisters pilot) that she was “moving on to filming a pilot for FX”. Fans didn’t immediately believe it because both Olsen and a multitude of Marvel stars have an understandable history of keeping secrets when it comes to their MCU returns. She did tell people Wanda wouldn’t return after she was one of the Blipped in Avengers: Infinity War only for the character to return the very next year in Avengers: Endgame. Can we expect the same here?

There are hopes that the character might resurface in upcoming Disney Plus series VisionQuest. The third installment in the WandaVision trilogy, it comes after WandaVision itself and spinoff Agatha All Along with the apparent intention to reunite the Maximoff family. Paul Bettany returns as Vision, with Ruaridh Mollica set to debut as the adult version of Wanda and Vision’s son Tommy. Joe Locke, who debuted as Tommy’s twin brother Billy in Agatha, is also rumored for an appearance. The question is whether Wanda herself will be featured.

For now, it’s wait and see if Wanda returns. Marvel clearly still has plans for her at some point as Agatha All Along downgraded her apparent death from certain to unclear. And that ambiguity means the door is always open. It just might be a while before Wanda herself walks through it.

In the meantime: Congrats to Elizabeth Olsen on the pickup of Seven Sisters.
