Liverpool have been handed a boost ahead of their pre-season friendly against Yokohama F Marinos on Wednesday (11:30am).

Alexis Mac Allister has returned to full training in a timely boost ahead of the new Premier League season. However, it’s unclear whether the friendly against Yokohama has come too soon.

The midfielder missed the Reds’ final matches last season against Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace, after Arne Slot revealed he had played through the latter part of the campaign with an injury and needed time to fully recover. The Argentine also sat out the first games of pre-season against Preston North End and AC Milan.

“It has been a long time, a difficult time because it is never nice to be injured,” Mac Allister told Liverpoolfc.com after training on Tuesday.

“But now I’m feeling good, it’s just about time and getting fit because they have had a good pre-season so they are definitely in a different physical shape, so I have to get used [to it] again. But it’s nice to be out there.”

Meanwhile, Alisson Becker will miss Wednesday’s match after flying back to Merseyside due to a personal matter. He is expected to rejoin his teammates when they return to training at the AXA Centre.

It means Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to start against Yokohama while Hugo Ekitike could wear Liverpool colours for the first time. Elsewhere, Joe Gomez has also flown home from the pre-season tour due to a minor Achilles injury.

After the defender complained of discomfort, Slot said: “He was with us for the first part of the week, but he had some Achilles problems. We thought it was better to assess it back in England and for him to work on him to come back to the team, probably in more ideal circumstances for him than be part of the group that every time goes out.

“So, we decided to let him go back to England. But we hope and expect to have him back soon.”

After wrapping up their pre-season tour on Wednesday, Liverpool will host a double-header at Anfield against Athletic Club on August 4.
