Coronation Street fans think that a “retcon” involving Eva Price is on the way. The Rovers Return landlady, who is played by Catherine Tyldesley, made a much-anticipated return to the ITV soap earlier this year, and in the latest episode, a secret started to come to light.

When Eva left the street initially in 2018, she had not long given birth to baby Susie and they departed for France just weeks after the little one’s dad ,Aidan Connor, had taken his own life. Upon her comeback, she arrived with new partner Ben Driscoll, his sons Will and Ollie in tow, and her mother-in-law Maggie arrived with the money to buy the pub.

On Monday’s instalment of the world’s longest-running TV soap, Eva was asking Susie what she would like for Christmas and was a little taken aback when her daughter asked for a little brother or sister. Ben didn’t see the issue, and told Eva that a baby of their own is something they should consider now that they are settled. Eva still wasn’t convinced, and promptly left the back room of the pub to get some air.

Once outside, Adam Barlow spotted her looking teary and it quickly became clear that he was aware of her secret too. Through tears, she told Adam: “I’m a liar. I just can’t believe I managed to keep it from him for so long,” but Adam insisted: “Eva, you had to. What choice did you have?” Eva then wondered if she could have ever brought another baby into the world.

Later on, Eva concluded that it would be a “disaster” if she told Ben the truth and thanked Adam for talking her round. She added: “I’m really glad you’re back in my life. Properly. Without sneaking about.” She then gave Adam a hug, and they were spotted by Susie Eva brushed it all off as nothing. Susie then told her grandmother Maggie what she had seen, and the matriarch was intrigued further when Adam popped into the pub to check in on Eva, and she grabbed his hand as she thanked him for his support.

Fans aren’t exactly sure what Eva’s big secret is but some think that a retcon, a contraction of retroactive continuity, has been put in the script, changing history to mean that Adam is in fact Susie’s biological father. Fans will remember that Adam and Eva began a relationship when she called things off with Aidan, but it was short-lived as she went back to Aidan when she realised she was pregnant.

One fan wrote on Reddit: “One of the theories I’ve seen thrown around is that Susie will actually turn out to be Adam’s in a retcon. I honestly hope not; I think that’d be really sad because Susie is one of the only connections left with Aidan,” and another said: “Doubt it’s just a case of thinking of Aidan/ not wanting kids from another man.

“Presumably Ben knows all about Aidan already. I don’t see why Eva wouldn’t have told Ben if she’d had a termination/lost a baby from Adam. Her and Adam were together long before she met Ben. I’m guessing she’s secretly had her tubes tied.”

A third wrote: “Something to do with babies. I think she’s either scared about everything in the past with Susie or she’s become infertile/had a hysterectomy or something like that. Especially as she’s only started to act cagey once it was brought up”, and a fourth said: “She can’t have another child, due to an illness? She had another baby after leaving and gave it up?”

Since her initial stint on the cobbles, Catherine has appeared in shows such as Scarborough and The Good Ship Murder since her initial exit from the serial, and also competed on Strictly Come Dancing. She was also set to star in a cancelled touring production of Bonnie and Clyde: The Musical last year and went viral over a social media scandal known as Cakegate in late 2023.

But Catherine has confessed she had been asked to head back previously, explaining that now was simply ‘the right time’ for her. Speaking to The Mirror, she said: “I really meant what I said when I left, that I would love to come back, cos Eva is so much fun to play. And it felt really serendipitous I suppose.

“I was in Malta, filming, and my agent said, ‘Kate would like to speak to you about Corrie’, and I assumed it was someone’s funeral. I thought ‘Somebody’s dying, they want me to rock up.’

“I remember my agent said ‘I don’t really know what to expect, let’s just keep a poker face, let’s hear her out, let’s see what happens.’ We were on a zoom and Kate said ‘Would you like to be landlady?’ and I went ‘Aaagh!!’ My agent was like that, ‘Nice one.’ I was just really shocked, really shocked.

Coronation Street is on ITV and STV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and ITVX and STV Player at 7am
