If you were planning on hitting the shops this Boxing Day, then you should be aware that many retailers will still be closed for the Christmas period.

You will still be able to shop online, but more big brands are increasingly keeping their doors closing on December 26 to give their staff a well-earned break.

Aldi and Lidl will remain closed, along with other major retailers including M&S, Home Bargains and Poundland. However, other supermarkets like Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons will still be open for business, but with reduced hours.

Primark and Matalan are also planning on opening on December 26. John Lewis will shut most of its stores on Boxing Day, apart from its Westfield Stratford City and Manchester Trafford Centre branches, which will open for shopping.

If you are planning on visiting a store, check its opening times online to avoid disappointment.

It comes as new research from VoucherCodes.co.uk reveals Brits are set to spend £3.81 billion this Boxing Day. This is up 2.2% compared to last year, with spending set to reach their highest level since 2021.

Saturday 27th is set to bring in the second highest sales (£3.48billionn), with spending up 4.9% from the previous year. But spending will tail off down to £1.02billion on New Years Eve.

Compare prices: Make sure you compare prices online to check you are actually getting a bargain. Some websites that let you track prices include Price Spy, Google Shopping, Price Runner and CamelCamelCamel.

Make a list: Write yourself a Boxing Day shopping list and stick to it, so only buy what you actually need. A bargain is never really a bargain if you were not already planning on buying it.

Don’t forget discount codes: Try stacking discount codes. VoucherCodes. includes a purple “works with sale” tag whenever a code or gift card reward can be used alongside a sitewide offer.

Be aware of scams: Make sure you stick to reputable retailers that you trust – if you are not sure, you can check their rating on Trustpilot. If in doubt, do not hand over any of your money.
