The Traitors have released a new trailer which teases a huge format change. In a special advert for the new series of the BBC show, Claudia Winkleman made an appearance to tease a brand new twist.

As a camera panned over a christmas-dinner>Christmas dinner table, the grandfather clock chimed and a candle was put out – just as a figure walked through in a red cloak, teasing some new twists and turns ahead.

“Have yourself a merry little Christmas… I’m joking,” Claudia said, as the Traitor in the red clock set down a lantern and turned the camera and made a shh gesture – but what does this all mean?

What the red cloak means remains to be revealed – but it will no doubt be a huge twist to come.

“Nobody knows what the red Traitors cloak means, what that player will do, how they will fit in or even if there is just one of them. But one thing is for sure, a different kind of Traitor in play will entirely change the game, again,” a source said.

“The new twist creates distrust and treachery like never seen before. Bosses know that viewers and players alike know the game inside out so they have to keep everyone on their toes. In series three, that meant dispatching three players early doors on the train. All will be revealed in the very first episode.”

The source added to The Sun: “But anyone who first got involved via The Celebrity Traitors is in for a shock. The celebrities all played nice, but the civilians did the opposite – the new series is totally savage.”

The Traitors is back for a new civilian series in January following a successful celebrity version. The celebrity version was won by Traitor Alan Carr, after he managed to oust the rest of the stars.

Speaking after winning the show, Alan said: “Although I won, I don’t really think I can give any tips and tricks. I don’t know if I was a really good Traitor or if the Faithfuls were just useless. I think anyone who goes for it should only apply if you love the game. You have to love Claudia, you have to love the castle and you have to love the game, otherwise it’s all pointless. I want to do it next year as well – maybe I can just sneak in with my cloak and lantern and murder someone just for the thrill, just for old time’s sake!

“What an honour and a complete shock [to win]! If someone had told me week one that I would even be around in week two I wouldn’t have believed them, so to be crowned the winner is absolutely mind blowing. What an adventure!

“I think all the deceit, the lying, the murdering of Paloma and Celia had all taken its toll and then I think it dawned on me that I had won such a huge amount for my charity, Neuroblastoma UK. The charity is so close to my heart that it all became a bit too much. Hopefully when people see how upset I was they won’t feel so bad that I killed all those national treasures.”
