Rugby League is a sport packed with iconic moments but so often, those moments are elevated by incredible commentary or sharp punditry.

Those pundits can help sell the game by casting an eye over an event and either explaining it or elevating it through their own words.

In rugby league, there have been plenty of brilliant pundits across the decades and we’re getting more and more each year as the sport grows and gains a bigger media footprint.

Serious About Rugby League asked fans who their favourite pundit, either past or present, was with plenty of debate and opinions thrown around among the 200-plus responses.

We’ve picked out a handful of the most prevalent names and strongest arguments put forward but it’s fair to say that there is no clear consensus with punditry a subjective talent. What some fans love, other may dislike and vice versa.

Who is the best pundit in rugby league?

Chris Hanson: Up and under, Eddie Waring.

Ray Connor: Barrie McDermott and Terry O’Connor were good together, plenty of good banter between them as well as good punditry.

Edward Bernard Alcock: Tony Rae, without question.

Leslie Wesley Rowntree: Eddie (Hemmings) knew his stuff and Stevo (Mike Stephenson) complimented him.

Scott Jones: Barry and Terry as they bounce off each other but I think Kevin Brown needs more air time. He doesn’t come across as biased to a particular club but he has a good rugby brain and analyses the games really well.

Julie Eden-Arnold: Phil Clare, without a doubt. He was very knowledgeable in all departments of the game. He left a big hole but Kevin Brown will do well.

Colin Hannon: (Jon) Wilkin says it as it is, brutally honest.

Danny Newsome: Ray French, legend.
