Will‘s emotional coming-out scene in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 left a big impact on both fans and the show’s main characters. In a recent interview, Ross Duffer addressed whether Finn Wolfhard’s Mike knows that he is Will’s crush after Will’s heartfelt speech in Episode 7.

Ross Duffer says Mike gets what ‘his friend is saying’ in Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 2

While speaking with People about the penultimate episode of Stranger Things, Ross Duffer said that Will’s indication that he has a crush on Mike was picked up on by the character.

Speaking about whether the camera cutting to Mike’s face after Will reveals he has feelings for a friend meant that Mike understood Will’s feelings for him, Duffer simply stated, “That was the intent.”

“Once Will is talking about Tammy and all that and his experience, yeah, it’s Mike — and his friends — all realizing and understanding now for the first time, even if Mike has been somewhat oblivious over these years, what his friend is saying,” the Duffer brother added.

The Stranger Things co-creator further shed light on Mike’s thoughts during Will’s monologue, stating, “He’s clocking what Will felt over the years.”

Nevertheless, Ross Duffer reiterated that the focal point of the sequence was still Noah Schnapp’s Will. “[The scene is] about Will understanding who he is and being less fearful and expressing himself to all his friends and family,” he said.

Schnapp voiced his satisfaction with Will’s coming out scene by noting, “I was nervous. I was like, ‘How are they going to write that?’ But I read it, and I just cried reading it, and I was like, ‘This is perfect. They did it.’ There’s no notes. It’s so impressive.”

Stranger Things is all set to conclude its five-season run with a two-hour-long finale, which comes out on Netflix on December 31, 2026, alongside a limited theatrical release.
