Roy Keane has been reflecting on the best goal he has seen live, yet the goalscorer in question was partly responsible for an extremely underwhelming spell at Manchester United in 2023.

Everyone has their own reasons for their favourite goal of all time.

Manchester United fans are fortunate enough to be able to pick through catalogues of world-class goals scored by some of the greatest players of all time, including George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona.

The most iconic goal of all was scored by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 1999 as he poked home a Teddy Sheringham flick to complete the most famous comeback in football history.

Have you seen Paul Scholes score a better goal than this wonder-strike vs Aston Villa?

Or how about Ryan Giggs with the greatest goal scored in FA Cup history, when he intercepted a Patrick Vieira pass and danced through the entire Arsenal defence before smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

Younger fans will look to Wayne Rooney’s overhead kick against Man City in 2011, which was replicated 12 years later by Alejandro Garnacho at Goodison Park to win the 2023/24 Goal of the Season award.

Erik ten Hag brought Wout Weghorst to United on loan between January and June 2023 as a stopgap signing, but the Dutchman struggled to score goals and will be remembered as a flop at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag and the fans appreciated Weghorst’s work ethic because they knew what they would get out of him with every performance, even though that usually meant a lack of goals.

However, Ten Hag signed Weghorst due to his reputation in the Netherlands of being a hardworking grafter with an eye for goal. He’d also scored goals in the Premier League before moving to United.

Even though it didn’t work out at United for Weghorst, the 33-year-old will be remembered by Dutch fans for his dramatic 101st-minute equaliser against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup quarter-final.

The goal was the climax of a bad-tempered match known as the ‘Battle of Lusail’, which saw a record 18 yellow cards. It’s no wonder former United captain turned pundit Roy Keane remembers it so well.

Before the latest episode of The Overlap, each pundit was asked to reflect on the best goal they had seen live, and Keane mentioned Weghorst’s strike against Argentina.

Weghorst managed to score just two goals in 31 appearances for United, although he did win the Carabao Cup during his time at the club.

Wout Weghorst suffered blow at the end of 2025

Weghorst missed Ajax’s final games of 2025 due to an ankle injury.

The experienced striker suffered severe damage to ligaments in his right ankle after being forced off in Ajax’s 3-1 away win over Fortuna Sittard.

It remains to be seen when Weghorst will return to action, but Ajax are currently sitting third in the Eredivisie, 16 points adrift of high-flying PSV Eindhoven.
