Championship side Widnes Vikings have swooped to sign a forward recently released by a fellow Championship outfit.

Last year’s League One champions North Wales Crusaders had confirmed the release of forward Jack Houghton with the 28-year-old leaving the club by mutual consent.

Houghton had been a key part of the Crusaders’ 2025 campaign when they won the League One competition, playing a total of 20 times and scoring a sole try.

After racking up over 115 appearances for the Crusaders and with the decision being so close to the eve of the season, it came as a surprise with Houghton becoming the 13th player to leave North Wales since their League One title-winning campaign.

It’s now been confirmed that the forward has signed with Widnes Vikings, penning a one-year deal at the club whose academy system he came through.

Widnes Vikings sign powerful forward on eve of season

For Houghton, it’s a return to the club where he progressed with the former academy product linking up with the side he left when he was younger.

Houghton said: “I’m made up to be a Widnes player. It feels like a full-circle moment for me coming back to the club.

“I pretty much grew up at Widnes, being in the scholarship and academy teams, so it’s great to be back.

“I’m hoping to bring competition for a shirt in what is already a great side, and I will be eager to take my chance when I get it.”

Head coach Allan Coleman added: “It’s brilliant to bring Jack on board. He’s come through our system and understands the club.

“I’ve watched him over the last two years for Swinton and North Wales. We’ve got some real power and size in our pack now, and he adds great depth to us, which is fantastic.”
