Last week, Sabalenka took part in a ‘Battle of the Sexes’ match against Nick Kyrgios, who suffered defeat in the men’s side of the tournament as he returned to competitive singles action with a wildcard entry.Sabalenka and Kyrgios’ showdown attracted criticism from some observers, but the Belarusian has made it clear that she is keen on a rematch. She also said that she would prefer to play it on a full court and for both players to have two serves rather than one.
Injury had kept Kyrgios out of competitive singles action for almost a year, and he took on American Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round on Tuesday, but lost 6-3 6-4 in 66 minutes.
Kyrgios is hoping for another wildcard entry for the Australian Open, and the Australian will play a doubles match with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis in a last-16 match on Wednesday.
The pair defeated Matthew Ebden and Rajeev Ram on Sunday and will face Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul in their next tie.
“This is a stepping stone,” Kyrgios said of his return.
“I actually just spoke to Daniil Medvedev in the locker room, and he’s like, ‘Look, you play one match every now and then, it’s not going to be the way you want it all the time’.
“As long as I feel good and I’m going to be able to try and use it as a building block. That’s my goal obviously, and not just Australian Open, but this year, for whatever this year holds, I do want to continue to play as much as I can.”
